Our First Christmas Tree

November 30, 2008 · No Comments

We’ve neglected posting for a while.  Pretty much business as usual and nothing we felt very compelled to announce to the world.  We spent the last 4 days for the Thanksgiving holiday at my parents’ house near St. Louis.  It was a very nice break from our busy lives.  We don’t do much out there except read books, talk lots about life and politics, cook huge meals…and eat huge meals.  And eat and eat and eat.  Needless to say, it was an enjoyable past few days.  Sadly, we can’t stay removed from the real world forever, and so we returned to Lawrence this evening, giving ourselves the one final day of vacation to just sit around our house and relax.

And before I get to talking about what we just did tonight, I wanted to invite anyone who cares to go and check out our “official” wedding photos.  The photos are gorgeous and we are beyond happy with them.  We have purchased the full rights to them and any of our friends and/or family who want to make prints are welcomed to.  Our photographer, Kelly, gets our immense gratitude and congratulations on a job very well done.

Tonight, after we came home and gave some much needed snuggles to the kitties, we got started setting up our Christmas tree.  Our house as a whole will be fairly minimally decorated this year.  We just don’t have money that we feel can be splurged on decorations.  I’m so glad that my sister-in-law reminded me of the excellent after-Christmas deals one can get on Christmas decorations.  So while the rest of our house will lack in festivity, we will still have a kick-ass Christmas tree.  We bought what I affectionately refer to as a “reusable” tree from the hardware store and set her up tonight.  Instead of describing how pretty it is, I will just leave you with a photo collection.  Enjoy and a belated Happy Thanksgiving to all!

The “other” Anniversary

November 1, 2008 · No Comments

Our photographer has been posting little teasers of our wedding photos on her blog.  Here is a very nice portrait that I can’t wait to have framed and hung in our house!

For those of you that know Greg and/or me, you know that we have been together quite a long time.  In fact, we have been together exactly 6 years today.  Yes, today is the 6th anniversary of our first date.  We went out to eat at a little Italian place, Bambino’s, in Lawrence, followed by going to see The Ring.  Man that movie scared the crap out of me.  To this day I joke that Greg took me to see a scary movie on purpose so I’d have to snuggle up to him.  Well, I guess it all worked out, right?  When we first got engaged and decided the rough time of year that we wanted to get married, I found out that November 1st was a Saturday and I got my heart set on getting married on our 6th anniversary.  Well, that was not to be.  Why? you ask…that would be due to the KU-K State football game today that KU just won by a landslide.  You see, here in Lawrence, weddings must be planned to avoid KU sporting events.  So today is our 6th anniversary of our first date and the 4-week anniversary of our wedding.

Appropriately enough we spent our anniversary doing the kind of mundane errands that dominate the lives of married home owners.  Home Depot, Target, Bed Bath and Beyond.  Did we miss any big box stores?  Happily, we also went to the Douglas County Clerks office and voted.  We even had to wait in line today - so that makes us happy to have avoided the inevitably long lines on Tuesday.  Vote people, Vote!!!

And p.s. to my hubby - Happy Anniversary :)

Carving Day 2008

October 26, 2008 · No Comments

I was honored to be included for the first time in a Smith Family tradition this year.  Pumpkin Carving Day.  This is a very special day every year especially for my sister-in-law, Kari.  She says its second only to Thanksgiving as far as her favorite days of the year.  I personally think its a fabulous idea to make up your own family holiday!  You can make a big deal about it and celebrate it every year, yet it doesn’t conflict with other family obligations.  So the Saturday before Halloween will henceforth be known as Carving Day.

We had so much fun.  Kari and her mom made the cutest lunch of mac-n-cheese and hot dog mummies.  They also whipped up a fabulous and gooey pumpkin cake.  After lunch was the main event - pumpkin carving.  Now in my family, the jack-o-lantern was kind of utilitarian, a chore.  We’d get 1 pumpkin and carve a simple jack-o-lantern face into it.  That is certainly not the case on Carving Day.  Everyone gets there own pumpkin, and the designs range from simple-ish to ultra-frustrating-complicated.  Greg and I brought one pumpkin for the both of us, and we can all guess who took charge of carving it.  I picked out a Halloween Kitty design, and Greg went to town “shaving” the design into our pumpkin.  I was allowed to do the part around the cat’s tail.  It turned out awesome, by far the best jack-o-lantern I’ve ever had to display!  I carved a spider/spider web pumpkin for my niece.  It was quite frustrating but I’m glad I put the effort into it because it turned out very well.  I just hope a 22-month old can appreciate the work I put in!  The rest of the day was awesome.  Good food, lots of sugar and just generally lots of fun with family.  Here are some photos from the day.

So I suggest everyone should make up their own holiday!  Just make it on a weekend because your boss probably won’t be convinced to give you a day off for it.

Cookies!!! And more cookies, and more…

October 25, 2008 · No Comments

Holy Jeez, we are exhausted!  Why?  Making cookies.  Its exhausting!  Sure, sure…making a whole batch of decorated sugar cookies for a Halloween celebration sounds like fun.  Well, that cheeriness only lasts until you are elbow deep in sticky frosting and you still have about 20 more pumpkins and bats to decorate.  Greg was so cute as he spent about 5 minutes each on the first 3 pumpkins, making them perfect.  And after that, he came to the dark side, meaning my method of frosting and dumping sprinkles and sparkles all over them in a haphazard manor.  We were working in bulk, and we had no other options.  In addition to the 3 dozen expertly decorated cookies, we also made a personal favorite:  Puppy Chow (aka Muddy Buddies).  Darn that stuff is good.  And super healthy to boot!

Here’s some photo documentation of our Friday night.  The sugar, the cookies, the dishes and the Phil, just dying for attention!  He finally got some “tiny punches” time (that’s when he kneads Greg’s bicep obsessively) with Greg later tonight.

Enjoy your pre-Halloween weekend everybody!!

The Case of the Stolen Yard Sign

October 17, 2008 · 2 Comments

Just a quick message to the jerk-off that stole our Obama-Biden yard sign:

If you are a Democrat that wanted the sign for your own yard:  That was cold.  Those signs cost money because you only deserve to display it if you’ve contributed to his campaign.  Stealing ours is like stealing a donation, and that’s not cool to do to your favored contender.

If you are a Republican:  Stupid move moron.  Greg and I will now go and spend another $10 for yard sign #2.  More money for him to bury Captain Old Man Pants and his attractive yet woefully incompetent running mate.

Oh cool, I can put my own polls in blog posts now!!!!  Lets try it out and see who people think stole our sign:

UPDATE:  How’s this for Karma - Not 10 minutes after writing this post, Greg and I headed to Chipotle for our delicious and lazy Friday night dinner.  As I finished paying for our meals, I glanced down to the floor and saw that Greg was practically stepping on a $10 bill.  That’s right.  I happened to find money in the EXACT amount that a shiny new Obama-Biden yard sign will cost.  Is the Universe telling us something?  Now I just have to rely on my engineering-minded husband to make our new sign robbery-proof.

UPDATE #2:  I bought our new sign this morning with the Chipotle money.  I learned at the local Dems office that nearly all Obama signs in my area were stolen.  So that means…lots more money for the Obama campaign!  Wow, what a logical and effective way to “stick it to us”.  Oh, and the nice lady at the Dems office suggested a rather creative booby-trapping method for our sign.  I won’t mention it here lest the info fall into the wrong hands…but I will say that its all natural, completely legal, and won’t leave injury (well, no permanent injury anyway)!

Wii! Finally!

October 9, 2008 · 2 Comments

You all know my feelings on video games…right?  Well, hypocrisy, here I come!  For months, Greg has been wanting a Wii.  Practically every time we went to Target, or Best Buy or some other big box store, Greg surreptitiously checked to see whether they had any Wii’s in stock.  The answer was consistently NO.  That was probably a good thing given how much they cost.  Well, as you may have gathered, we got ourselves a Wii…finally.  I’m not going to directly admit to using money we received from wedding gifts to make the purchase.  That would be completely childish and irresponsible.  No no.  Greg and I are just doing our part to put some money back into the struggling economy right now.  We are being patriotic!

So as I mentioned, I have always had strong feelings against video games.  I see them as a pretty deplorable waste of time.  I never had a game system growing up, a fact which I used to berate my parents for, and now I thank them.  I don’t know whether its a good defense or not, but the Wii seems a bit different to me.  Sure its still a colossal waste of time, but at least it involves some physical movement and (at least in the games we purchased) there aren’t any story lines to get us sucked in to the point where we’ll be playing for hours on end.  Greg and I had a spirited boxing match last night.  I’m a little ashamed to admit that I got slightly out of breath trying to beat up my virtual husband with a couple of plastic controllers.

Not only did we get a couple of frivolous and fun games (I also bought Guitar Hero on eBay…yea!!!!!), but for a whopping $5, Greg downloaded Super Mario Bros. 3.  It shows how old and lame we are that this 15+ year old game with the cruddiest graphics ever is just as exciting to us as the state-of-the-art Wii sports games.  And don’t worry dear readers, I will for sure get some awesome photos of us playing our Wii posted soon.  There’s nothing cuter than a 31 year old man bowling with a wii-mote!

Post-Wedded Bliss

October 6, 2008 · 1 Comment

Sooo, how what everyone’s weekend?  Anyone do anything fun?  What’d we do, you ask?  Oh, we just got MARRIED!!!!  Yea!  The deed is done.  I know that scores of you are anxiously awaiting the photos.  Well, unfortunately, you’ll have to wait just a bit longer.  Our official photographs won’t be ready for a few more weeks.  As he mentions on our website, Greg is accepting digital photos from guests and will include them in a Picassa web album of our wedding.  Here’s a little tease:

Aren’t our rings pretty?

We also wanted to say a big thanks again to all of you who celebrated our big day with us.  Greg and I are slowly getting back to our normal routine.  It was a crazy week full of parties and guests and food and gifts.  Wonderful yet overwhelming!  In my opinion, our wedding went just how we wanted it to.  Sure there were a couple of details that I would have done differently if given the chance, but I don’t have that chance, nor would I want to do it all over again (any time soon anyway)!  We are taking today and tomorrow off from work to regain our sanity and reclaim our house.  The kitties are also enjoying having the house back to just us.  But in all seriousness, Greg and I really enjoyed having friends and family stay with us.  The wedding itself was so crazy that if people hadn’t stayed with us, we wouldn’t have gotten to spend quality time with pretty much anyone!  Our house felt so full and happy with everyone here…it was nice.

So stay tuned for pictures and continuing news of our post-wedding life together.  It only gets better from here, right?

Wedding Prep is Tiring!!

October 1, 2008 · No Comments

My boys sleepingon the couch.

The wedding is 4 days away.  Its busy here and we are tired!  Greg has been a busy bee around the house since last Friday after work getting everything ready for our guests.  He was able to take Monday and Tuesday of this week off of work, but he forced me to write a “honey-do” list to keep him busy for his days off.  WELL, if you FORCE me to.  Of course the brat had everything on his list practically done by Saturday! Not that I’m complaining.

Now I get to take vacation with him.  We have lots to do, but we haven’t been too busy to take some crazy cute pictures of Phil doing his crazy cute stuff.  So Enjoy.  I can’t come up with anything intellectual to say this evening.

Down with Mediocrity, Bring on the Elite

September 26, 2008 · 2 Comments

Another timeout from wedding stuff for some political musings.  I’m trying to present this information in a relatively unbiased light.  I’ll be absolutely the first person to admit that one can obtain an excellent education from a state or otherwise “lesser” college.  There is nothing that says someone with a degree from, oh say, Yale (I’m talking ’bout you, W) has any intellectual advantage over someone who put in the effort to earn a degree from a non-Ivy League school.  I’m actually of the opinion that the name of the school is FAR inferior in importance to the effort and determination that the student puts into his/her education. That being said, I started thinking about education and the education of our Presidential/Vice Presidential candidates while reading a wonderful article in Newsweek written by Sam Harris.  He eloquently asserts, correctly in my opinion, that “there is a mad love of mediocrity in this country”.  People like a leader that is “just like them”.  Well people, look where that got us for the last 8 years.  Incredible.  We don’t need Joe Blow American in the highest office.  We need someone who is frighteningly smart, logical, persistent, and who doesn’t rely on “a higher power” to make decisions for them.  He specifically rails on Sarah Palin, which got me wondering - what is her educational background?  Does it indicate that maybe, although she completely lacks experience in nearly all aspects of federal government, she could at least quickly learn what she needs to?  Well, I looked, and I’m quite convinced that she can’t.  I’ve seen shorter paths to a Bachelor’s degree out of people who smoke weed 5 days a week.

From Wikipedia:

Sarah Palin:

In 1982, Palin enrolled at Hawaii Pacific College but left after her first semester. From there she transferred to North Idaho College, where she spent two semesters as a general studies major. From the community college she then transferred to the much larger University of Idaho for two semesters.[11][12] During this time Palin won the Miss Wasilla Pageant beauty contest,[13][14] then finished third (second runner-up) in the Miss Alaska pageant,[15][16] at which she won a college scholarship and the “Miss Congeniality” award.[17] She then left the University of Idaho and attended Matanuska-Susitna College in Alaska for one term. The next year she returned to the University of Idaho where she spent three semesters completing her Bachelor of Science degree in communications-journalism, graduating in 1987.

That’s a LOT of schools, and I think it says something about her character.  To be an equal opportunist, I wanted to give all the candidates the same scrutiny.  Joe Biden might not have been a model student, but by my calculations, he received nearly double the degree at about 3 fewer colleges.  Oh yea, then he got his J.D. at Syracuse, again, not with a stellar class rank, but complete nonetheless.

Joe Biden:

Biden attended the University of Delaware in Newark,[10] where by his own later description he was a lazy student.[11] He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with a double major in history and political science in 1965,[2] ranked 506th of 688 in his class.[12]

He went on to receive his Juris Doctor from Syracuse University College of Law in 1968,[10] where by his own description he again underperformed and ranked 76th of 85 students.[11][13] During his first year there, he was accused of having plagiarized 5 of 15 pages of a law review article. Biden said it was inadvertent due to his not knowing the proper rules of citation, and Biden was permitted to retake the course after receiving a grade of F, which was subsequently dropped from his record.[13] (The issue came up in 1987 during Biden’s presidential campaign, and later that year the Delaware Supreme Court’s Board of Professional Responsibility cleared Biden of the plagiarism charges regarding his standing as a lawyer, saying Biden had “not violated any rules”.)[14] Biden was admitted to the Delaware Bar in 1969.

And then we move on to the top of the ticket…

John McCain:

Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, McCain entered the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. There, he was a friend and informal leader for many of his classmates,[9] and sometimes stood up for people who were being bullied.[4] He also became a lightweight boxer.[10] McCain came into conflict with higher-ranking personnel, he did not always obey the rules, and that contributed to a low class rank (894 of 899) despite a strong intelligence.[9][11] He did well in academic subjects that interested him, such as literature and history, but studied only enough to pass subjects he struggled with, such as mathematics.[4][12] McCain graduated in 1958.

Barack Obama

Following high school, Obama moved to Los Angeles, where he studied at Occidental College for two years.[10] He then transferred to Columbia University in New York City, where he majored in political science with a specialization in international relations.[11] Obama graduated with a B.A. from Columbia in 1983.Obama entered Harvard Law School in late 1988. At the end of his first year, he was selected, based on his grades and a writing competition, as an editor of the Harvard Law Review.[19] In February 1990, in his second year, he was elected president of the Law Review, a full-time volunteer position functioning as editor-in-chief and supervising the Law Review’s staff of eighty editors.[20] Obama’s election as the first black president of the Law Review was widely reported and followed by several long, detailed profiles.

Purely going on intellectual qualifications, I see a couple of clear winners.  I will let everyone draw their own conclusions.  We all need to accept that people SMARTER than us need to be leading us.  We need to stop accepting and encouraging mediocrity in this country.

Eleven Days??

September 23, 2008 · No Comments

I have no idea why the number 11 is hitting me today…but we’re getting married in ELEVEN days.  Holy jeez.  I guess in my crazy brain, eleven is SOOOO much smaller than twelve.  Not really.  I’m sure that I’ll have consistent, yet worsening panic attacks every day that the number decreases even more.  I think everything is taken care of…I’m sure those are the exact words every self-assured bride utters just before they realize that they have forgotten something of grave importance.  Food? Check.  Flowers?  Check.  Invitations, music, booze, wedding dress?  Checks all around.   I’ve tried to keep the number of little details to a minimum.  If there is one thing I have learned by witnessing all my friends and family get married before me its this:  the more details there are, the more stuff can go wrong and the more upset a bride will be on her wedding day.  I have really tried to take a zen approach to this to keep my stress to a minimum.  Unfortunately, I didn’t factor in the stress of having a butt-kicking job at the same time.  Luckily, Greg and I are taking a few days off before and after the wedding.  What a treat!

I wanted also to say a quick thanks to every one of our friends and family that have offered to help, it is quite heart-warming to know we have so many people that we can depend on!

Stay tuned for future panic attacks!  Oh man, I’ve become such a stereotype :(
